What’s going on in Year 1?
Introduction to Year 1
Welcome to Year 1. In our year group there are two classes: 1H (Miss Harris) and 1Ha (Miss Hassan).
In the Autumn Term we will be learning about:
English: Writing simple sentences and simple narratives and immersing ourselves in the following texts: So Much!, Katie in London, Rama and Sita, Anansi the Spider and the Christmas story.
Maths: Place value to 10 and 20, adding and subtracting numbers to 10, then 20, 2D and 3D shapes
Science: Everyday materials, seasonal change (autumn)
Foundation Subjects: My local area, traditional tales (Rama and Sita, Anansi the Spider, Christmas)
In the Spring Term we will be learning about:
English: Retelling stories using simple narratives (focusing on chronological order) e.g. The Great Race (Chinese New Year Story) and the Magic Paintbrush. We will also look at the poem ‘Life Doesn’t Frighten Me’ by Mya Angelou and make fact files on Hispaniola.
Maths: Adding and subtracting numbers to 20, then 50. Measurement – length and height, weight and volume
Science: Seasonal change (winter and spring)
Foundation Subjects: China, Hispaniola (The Dominican Republic and Haiti)
In the Summer Term we will be learning about:
English: Writing simple sentences in order with a focus on non-fiction, such as a simple biography about Mae Jemison and creating a dinosaur fact book, drawing on all the information that we discover in our learning. We will also be writing onomatopoeic poetry about dinosaurs.
Maths: Multiplication and division, fractions (halves and quarters), position and direction, place value of numbers to 100, money and time
Science: Seasonal change (summer), Plants, Animals (including humans)
Foundation Subjects: Space Heroes, Dinosaurs

- Learning of ‘tricky words’
